Working Toward Church Unity
THE PEOPLE of God have always had the call to reveal the glory of God. The beauty of the Church in being one is that it comprises every tribe, tongue, and nation.
THE PROBLEM of the first century that we are still dealing with today is that we, as the Church, are not just diversified, we’re divided. Other Christian leaders and congregations are not viewed as fellow teammates and family members but as strangers and competitors from which to distance and distinguish ourselves.
THE PURPOSE of the Church is to reveal the manifold wisdom of God to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places (Ephesians 3:10). The point of the Church is to display all of the diversity of God’s wisdom, all the different forms of God’s power.
THE PRAXIS of Netzer works toward functional unity in the Body of Christ as one Church, even among our great God-given diversity. As connections and trust are strengthened between leaders and their congregations and ministries, gospel mobilization and community impact become increasingly available. We can begin thinking and seeking the Lord about how we, as the church of a given region, can function more faithfully and effectively together.
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”
Jesus, John 17
